How Supermanage Protects Your Data

Data privacy is a big deal. Let’s answer some common questions about how Supermanage protects your team’s data.

Data privacy is a big deal. Let’s answer some common questions about how Supermanage protects your team’s data.

How does Supermanage work? What data does it have access to?

How does Supermanage work? What data does it have access to?

First and foremost, Supermanage only accesses messages in channels you’ve given it explicit permission to access. By default, Supermanage doesn’t access any messages in your Slack workspace when you first install the app. When you create snapshots, you will select the public or private channels you want Supermanage to access and analyze (we currently don’t support DMs).

When you create a snapshot for one of your teammates, Supermanage will analyze all messages that person sent over the last week in the channels you added. Once all that data has been distilled into a snapshot, Supermanage will deliver it to you in a DM. No one else will be able to access the snapshots you create.

Once Supermanage is installed in your workspace, any member can install the app. Other users will be able to create snapshots for any of their teammates, but only using channels they have access to.

What does Supermanage do with the data it can access?

What does Supermanage do with the data it can access?

Supermanage doesn’t store your data or use it for anything other than creating your snapshots. However, Supermanage uses OpenAI to process Slack messages. OpenAI stores your data for up to 30 days and then delete it. Your data will NOT be used for training models, per their terms of service.

Since Supermanage doesn’t store your data, it’s kept totally private. That said, for especially sensitive data that you want to keep extra secure — just exclude those channels with sensitive information from your snapshots.

I don’t want my team to think I’m “spying” on them. How does Supermanage approach transparency?

We get this question a lot. A couple important points here:

  1. You can only ask Supermanage to analyze messages from areas of your Slack workspace where you’re a member. If you’re not a member of a private channel or a group DM, you won’t be able to analyze any of the Slack messages included in those areas of your workspace. In other words, what you can’t already see, Supermanage won’t show you.

  2. In the name of transparency, Supermanage announces itself anywhere it’s added in your Slack workspace. When Supermanage is added to public or private channels, the bot sends a message to the channel so everyone knows it’s been added.

  3. Supermanage snapshots are intended to benefit direct reports just as much as they benefit managers. The onus of getting a manager up to speed is now on Supermanage, not on the direct report. In that way, we hope to help teams feel empowered, not surveilled, by the product.
